As soon as you start playing ranked games, one thing you’ll want to know is how you can increase your Dota 2 MMR. For most people, it takes a long time. But with proper guides and a little bit of extra help, the process can be sped up by a lot.
It is said that you can only get better by playing a better opponent. And it’s true, not only for games but for life in general. If you live in a bad neighbourhood, simply moving to a better one will improve your quality of life substantially. It’s the same with Dota 2: playing in a higher skill bracket where players understand the fundamentals and don’t repeat the same mistakes over and over will give you a chance to focus on your own game instead of having to tell people to stop feeding or to buy wards.
When you start competing in the Ancient bracket or above, the quality of your games gets significantly better. You’ll still encounter many of the problems that you see in lower skill games, but it happens more seldom and in a way that’s not as disturbing. Furthermore, you encounter a lot of good players from whom you can learn: how to farm, how to team fight, what items to buy on certain heroes and so on. That alone will make you want to get better and climb even higher, in order to discover even better players.
After you’ve played 100 games at around 4000 MMR, playing at 3000 will feel like you’re playing with bots. So even if you lose a few hundred MMR points in 100 games, that experience of playing at a much higher level will be extremely useful. It will allow you to stabilise your MMR at a much higher level than before and understand many of the things that you hadn’t even noticed in the Archon 5 / Legend 1 division. So instead of stagnating at 3000 MMR for a long time and not knowing what you are missing, you are now capable to tell much more specifically what you need to work on and what you need to do to be a better player.

At boostmmr, we provide those who are eager to test themselves against better players with a unique opportunity to play in a higher division. How much higher, it’s totally up to them. Some people thrive when they move 500 MMR points above their current bracket, others when they make an even bigger leap.
Some, however, find it difficult to maintain their new MMR, simply because they lack certain skills that are required to do well at the new level. Which is why we’ve decided to create a series of tutorials about how to increase your Dota 2 MMR.
This is the first article in a weekly series that will teach you how to fight, how to farm, how to properly play each role and everything else that you need in order to become a stronger player. For this first piece, let’s discuss the fundamentals of MMR in Dota 2 and how to increase it.
Starting with the 4th Dota 2 matchmaking season, Valve has decided to split MMR into two major categories: Core MMR and Support MMR.
This is the MMR that gets modified based on how you do in games where you play a core role, such as carry, midlaner or offlaner. If you intend to become a very good core player and perhaps master a role such as midlaner or carry, this is the type of MMR that you’ll need to increase in order to play at a higher level.
In the lower Dota 2 MMR divisions, almost everyone wants to play a core role. That’s because people only see the obvious things and don’t have a very solid understanding of how the game works. Until you start playing at a higher level you don’t even realize just how many things support players do to secure a victory for their team.
We all like the feeling that we’re in control. And as a Dota 2 match progresses, the cores naturally have a lot more influence over the fate of the game. Which is why you’ll see so many players insist on playing mid or carry. If you’re one of them, make sure you’re sticking to one role and a small set of heroes until you’ve mastered each of them. Start with five that give you a wide enough range to play against almost anything and then learn everything you can about these five: skill builds, item builds, surviving the early game, farming patterns, timings, team fighting and so on.
This is the MMR that gets modified based on how well you perform in games where you play either position 4 support (roamer) or position 5 support (carry babysitter). Not that many people want to play these roles so if you set out to become good at them, you can win a lot of games for your teams.
Contrary to popular belief, supports play a huge role in Dota 2. In the early game, a good roamer can win at least two lanes for his team with his calculated actions. And it’s a period of the game when almost every enemy core is vulnerable. With just a little bit of help from you, your carry or midlaner could potentially make a kill and start to gain an important gold and experience lead.
If you want to learn how to increase your Dota 2 MMR, the answer is a mixture of psychology and training. But at the fundamental level, MMR is something that you gain over time by having a win rate of more than 50%. In 100 games, if you lose 49 and win 51, overall you’ve gained around 50 MMR.
Of course, ideally you’ll want to reach a higher win rate, in order to climb faster. Or, if you’ve been helped to reach a considerably higher level than your natural one, your goal should be to maintain your new MMR until you’ve acquired a better understanding of the game. In such a case, having a win rate of 45% would allow you to lose just 250 MMR for every 100 games that you play. That would give you 200 games until you’ve lost even 500 MMR points. And during this time, you can be certain that you’ll learn a lot of things from your stronger opponents and teammates. If your natural MMR is 3000, and we increase it for you to 4000, by the time you’re back to 3500 you will have learned quite a few important lessons. And this will allow you to maintain that new MMR or even raise it back to 4000.
One important thing to keep in mind when trying to increase your Dota 2 MMR is that the game itself is very complex but does not require you to master it entirely before you can start to climb. All you need to master is one role and a tiny set of heroes. And you’re set for success.
